Types of Horse Bedding
- Wood shavings – The most widely used stable bedding in the UK; highly absorbent, easy to muck out, and available in dust-extracted grades suitable for horses with respiratory sensitivities
- Straw – Traditional, cost-effective, and biodegradable; provides good cushioning and insulation but is less absorbent than shavings and not suitable for horses that eat their bedding or those with respiratory issues
- Paper & cardboard bedding – Virtually dust-free and highly absorbent; an excellent choice for horses with severe dust allergies, RAO, or IAD; biodegradable and compostable
- Hemp bedding – Highly absorbent, low-dust, and biodegradable; a popular alternative to shavings that composts quickly and produces a smaller muck heap
- Rubber matting – Used as a standalone system or in combination with a thin layer of bedding; reduces the total volume of bedding required, provides excellent cushioning, and is easy to clean and disinfect
- Pellet bedding – Compressed wood or straw pellets that expand when wet to create a highly absorbent, low-dust bed; increasingly popular for its efficiency and small muck heap
