How to Get the Most Accurate Reading

• Measure at the same time of day – Ideally before feeding and after the horse has passed droppings, to reduce variation between readings
• Stand the horse square on level ground – Any unevenness in stance or surface will affect the girth measurement and skew the result
• Take the girth measurement correctly – The tape should sit just behind the elbow and withers, snug but not tight, with the horse standing relaxed
• Record readings regularly – Weekly or fortnightly measurements give you a trend line that's far more useful than a single reading
• Use the same tape each time – Different tapes use slightly different formulae; consistency matters more than absolute accuracy
