An overreach occurs when a horse's hind hoof strikes the heel or coronary band of the front foot — most commonly during jumping, fast work, or when a horse is tired and loses its natural rhythm. The resulting cuts and bruising to the heel bulbs and coronary band can be painful, slow to heal, and in some cases lead to permanent scarring. Overreach boots are one of the simplest and most effective pieces of protective equipment available, and for horses prone to overreaching, they should be considered essential rather than optional.
