Internal parasites are one of the most significant and preventable threats to equine health. Redworm, tapeworm, bots, and pinworm can cause serious damage to the gut, liver, and overall condition if left unmanaged — yet resistance to wormers is a growing problem when treatments are used without a targeted strategy. The modern approach combines regular worm egg count testing with strategic use of the right active ingredient at the right time of year.

Active Ingredients & What They Treat

• Ivermectin – Effective against large and small redworm, bots, and pinworm; one of the most widely used active ingredients in equine worming
• Moxidectin – Targets encysted small redworm larvae as well as adult worms; typically used as part of an autumn or winter treatment programme
• Praziquantel – The only active ingredient effective against tapeworm; often combined with ivermectin or moxidectin for a broad-spectrum treatment
• Fenbendazole – Effective against roundworms and some stages of redworm; used in five-day courses for encysted larvae treatment in some programmes
• Pyrantel – Targets roundworms and tapeworm at double dose; a useful alternative where resistance to other ingredients is suspected

A Note on Responsible Worming

Blanket worming of all horses on a fixed schedule is no longer considered best practice. Worm egg count testing allows targeted treatment of horses that actually need it, reducing the risk of resistance developing. Always consult your vet or an equine parasitologist when planning your worming programme.
