Martingales, Running Martingales & Training Forks
A martingale is a training and safety aid, not a shortcut. Used correctly and fitted properly, it prevents a horse from throwing its head above the point of control, supports a more consistent rein contact, and reduces the risk of the rider being struck in the face during strong work or jumping. The key is understanding which type suits your horse's way of going — and fitting it so it only comes into effect when genuinely needed.
A running martingale fitted too short restricts natural head movement and creates a false outline; too long and it offers no benefit. As a guide, the rings should reach the horse's gullet when the martingale is held up the neck. Always use rein stops to prevent rings catching on bit rings.
