Bedmax shavings are large flake pine shavings, purpose made to provide an ideal bedding for horses and ponies.
We began making Bedmax in the year 2000 to offer you a bedding developed specifically to help you address all the issues that threaten the health and wellbeing of your horses in their stables.
Today we make Bedmax to our unique specification at three dedicated production plants in the UK. Our absolute priority is still to provide you with a 100% natural bedding with the lowest possible levels of the airborne dust that can damage your horse’s respiratory system, and to help you create a bed that maximises hoof health, support, protection, hygiene and biosecurity.
Dust Extracted
Bedding is potentially the biggest source of dust in the stable, and dust can seriously damage your horse’s respiratory system. Bedmax has one of the lowest levels of dust on the market.
Hoof Care
Your horse’s hooves need firm, resilient support. Our larger flakes provide it. We also dry Bedmax to a controlled moisture content to prevent hooves from drying out and cracking.
Hygiene
We make Bedmax shavings from fresh pine because pine offers antibacterial action against harmful bacteria and fungi. We also dry our shavings at sterilising temperatures during production.
Joints
Bedmax shavings help create a clean, supportive bed that encourages horses to lie down and rest, and cushions hocks and other joints from damage.
Ammonia
Poor bedding and bedding management exposes horses to greater contact with ammonia, which damages the respiratory system and attacks the hoof
Rest
Horses in stables need to be able to lie down to achieve deep REM sleep. A comfortable, clean, natural bed encourages horses to rest properly and safely.
How to Use Bedmax Horse Bedding
This is how our experts recommend that you make a bed that will be best for your horse and easiest and least wasteful for you to maintain:
An average empty loose box or stable typically requires 4 to 6 bags of shavings to achieve the correct bed depth, with each 18 kg Bedmax bag being pressure packed and covering approximately 2 to 3 square metres.
The shavings should be loosened and aerated with a shavings fork, then spread evenly across the floor. Create a level bed around 6 to 8 inches deep while leaving space at the doorway to reduce spillage, as a deeper bed improves comfort, manages moisture more effectively and reduces the amount of replacement bedding required.
Many owners also choose to bank shavings 12 to 18 inches high around the walls as a reserve of clean, dry bedding, which can help prolong bed life during mucking out, particularly when rubber matting is used on stable floors.
To maintain an ideal Bedmax bed, horses should be removed from the stable where possible while mucking out, and droppings should be removed promptly using a shavings fork.
Shake the fork gently to allow clean shavings to fall back onto the bed and minimise waste, then loosen the surface of the bed once mucking out is complete. Every two to three days, heap the loosened surface shavings into banks at the sides, remove any concentrated wet areas and pull the banks back into the main bed.
Fresh shavings should be added as needed to maintain the correct depth, with most customers using around 1 to 1.5 bags per week, depending on the horse’s housekeeping habits.
