Anthelmintic resistance is a genuine and growing threat to equine health, driven largely by the overuse of wormers in horses that don't actually need treating. Worm egg count testing allows you to identify which horses in your herd have a significant worm burden — and treat only those that do, preserving the effectiveness of the wormers we still have available.
What Worm Egg Count Kits Test For
- Strongyle egg counts (FEC) – The faecal egg count measures eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces; counts below 200 EPG are generally considered low burden and may not require treatment
- Tapeworm saliva tests – Some kits include a saliva-based EquiSal tapeworm test, which is more accurate than faecal methods for detecting tapeworm burden
- Encysted redworm – Cannot be detected by standard egg counts; requires a targeted autumn blood test or strategic use of moxidectin or fenbendazole
How At-Home Kits Work
Most postal worm count kits involve collecting a fresh faecal sample, sealing it in the provided container, and posting it to a laboratory for analysis. Results are typically returned within a few days with a clear recommendation on whether treatment is needed and, if so, which active ingredient to use.
